by Ben N.

King Henry… After his recent ascent to the throne, King Henry IV has been under pressure from numerous small rebellions. Heading into the play Henry IV Part 1, the newly crowned king will face the largest challenge of his reign; a rebellion sparked by the family that supported him through his rise to power.

Sir Walter Blunt… Characterized by his display of immense chivalry and values of honor and dignity, Walter Blunt selflessly serves the king. Played by Noam F., Sir Walter Blunt is a key character in the king’s resistance to rebellion.

Prince Hal… Although he may be the heir apparent to the throne, Prince Harry (known to most by his nickname Hal) falls short of royalty in all aspects. Choosing to spend his time drinking in the bar with his lowlife entourage, Hal neglects his royal duties to his father. Although, as we learn from Hal in the play, he may be plotting a scheme to win his father’s favor.

Sir John Falstaff… He may be a knight, but he certainly doesn’t act like one. First and foremost a professional-level drunk, Falstaff spends his time idle in the bar as Hal’s closest associate and the main comic character of the play. Known to be the greatest comic character Shakespeare created, Falstaff brings light into Henry IV through quick banter and numerous puns.

Ned Poins… Another one of Hal’s closest friends, Poins spends his time in the bar vying with Falstaff for Hal’s attention by devising mischievous plans to humiliate Falstaff.

Hotspur… Known by his moniker Hotspur due to his quick temper and hot-headedness, Harry Percy is a central figure of the rebellion against King Henry IV. Aggressive on and off the battlefield, he is the chief rival and polar opposite of Hal. Hotspur is driven by his strong ideas as to what it means to be “honorable,” and will stop at nothing to show his strength.

Worcester… One of the masterminds of the rebellion and Hotspur’s uncle, Thomas Percy the 1st earl of Worcester believes that the king has wronged his family by not rewarding them after they helped him in his ascent to the throne.

Madame Glendower… Arguably the most mysterious member of the Henry IV cast, Glendower is the leader of the Welsh rebellion against the king. She is known to be wild and rash, believed to possess magic powers. She is partnered with Hotspur, Worcester, and Edmund Mortimer.

Edmund Mortimer… Believed by many to be the true heir of Richard II’s throne, Mortimer has been taken prisoner by Glendower and defected from King Henry IV’s court. He is married to Glendower’s daughter and serves as a figurehead of the Welsh rebellion.
